The Shubenacadie & District Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in June of 1962 when 40 people from surrounding areas came together and met in the Shubenacadie Community Hall to form the Brigade. The first truck was a 1959 3 ton Chev purchased for the amount of $1,600.00. This did not include a tank, pump or hoses. A local oil distributor donated a tank and pump was purchased. Individuals as well as businesses donated hose and other items for the truck. The members supplied the labor. In addition, a trailer with a pump and hose that could be towed behind other vehicles was provided by Civil defense.

The original fire hall was built in the spring and summer of 1963 on land on the Maitland road. The building was made of cinder blocks and measured 30 feet by 35 feet. The cost to put the building up was approximately $3,400.00. Once the hall was constructed, an old fire truck was loaned to the brigade by the Civil Defense for its use. In addition a second-hand panel truck was donated to the brigade.

The original fire hall met the needs of the community for fifteen years. Due to the increased need for fire protection. In 1977 an extension was built to provide two extra bays for the apparatus as well as a combination meeting room and radio room. This additional space covered the needs of the brigade until 1996.

Since the Shubenacadie & District Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1962, many changes have occurred in the fire service. As equipment became more complex as well as fire retardant foams etc. the need for more structured training became apparent. In 1996 the membership of the brigade decided to expand the existing fire hall. After reviewing several options it was decided to build a twelve foot section with two floors the length of the south side of the building. In addition a new pitched roof was installed along with new siding . In the spring of 1997 the renovations were started.

Shubenacadie & District Volunteer Fire Brigade from its modest beginnings has involved well organized, well trained volunteer fire service.
